NetBSD at the Vintage Computer Festival Europe (and a funny Sun3 story)
Following the
same procedure as every year, Jochen Kunz will be
at the
Vintage Computer Festival Europe (VCFE).
He will
show 2.11BSD on a PDP-11/73 and also do some NetBSD propaganda with another
attendee who will probably show a HP 9000/400 running NetBSD to demonstrate
support of modern operating systems when a hardware vendor has abandoned
his platform.
VCFE will happen on April 29th and May 1st in Munich, Germany.

BTW: this reminds me of the guy that I happened to run into the other
day, who was on a mission to bring gcc 4.x to his Sun 3/80 running
SunOS 4.1.1 - apparently Sun3 machines are still in as widespread use
as VAXens. As the native SunOS C compiler can't compile a gcc 4.x (kwality...)
directly, he took the approach to build gcc 4.x with a gcc 3.x compiler.
Which he builds with gcc 2.95, which he builds with gcc 1.44,
which he builds with the native SunOS C compiler (or so, I forgot
the details, but you get the idea).
A compile cycle takes about 13 hours on the machine, and of course lots
of patches to both the operating system as well as the sources have to
be applied.
If all goes well, the final result will be available via the
Sun3/3x Archive.
