[20041129] The 1994 USL-Regents of UCal Settlement Agreement
Those following recent events have seen the bickering between SCO and IBM. While some people think this is the first time Open Source being in trouble from some company, it definitely is not: In the early 90s, the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) was threatened by AT&T's "Unix System Laboratories", (USL) which was the original holder of the "Unix" trademark and code then. They blamed UCB to have used files under AT&T copyright in their BSD, and the whole story went to court.

The exact outcome of that trial was long kept secret, but NetBSD (and probably FreeBSD?) had to change their code then, before making e.g. the old versions via CVS accessible. See the Groklaw-article for more informationon the settlement made between USL and UCB.
