Having that many different document formats asks for a whole lot of
programs for converting one into another, and doing other
manipulations on documents in any of these formats. The
availability and quality of such tools for a given format also
make it more or less easy to deal with that format.
This section tries to give a list of the most commonly used tools
that are available for manipulating the document formats described
in the previous chapter, concentrating on the following aspects for
each tool:
- Where to get: Postal and/or email address, URL of web
page and/or FTP-site, if freely available
- Supported formats: List of which formats the described
tool can read and write.
- Pros and Cons: Description of the tool's strenghts and
flaws
- Tips & Tricks: Often some features are non-obvious;
if there are some such for the given tool, they are listed here.
- Fixes: Some of the publically available tools can (and
have) to be tuned to produce proper output. Sometimes it's even
necessary to modify the source code. If so, references to these
patches are listed here.
- Other tools: List of other tools which can be used
together with the program described here.
